Healthy Halloween Treats

Your aging loved one may not want to go trick-or-treating, that doesn’t mean they aren’t craving something sweet this Halloween!

As your elderly loved one ages, you may notice they are developing quite the sweet tooth. Turns out, there is scientific reasoning behind their cravings. The older we get, the less sensitive our taste buds become. Studies show seniors tend to lose sensitivity to salty flavors first, while the ability to retain sweet flavors is retained the longest. Therefore the sweeter foods have more flavor and all around taste better.

While sugar is not the healthiest option for seniors, there are plenty of food choices that are sugar free, but still sweet. Take a look at a few options below:

Dried Fruit – If your loved one is a fan of chewy or gummy sweets, then dried fruit is a great choice as they contain far fewer calories and grams of sugar and are packed with vitamins and dietary fiber.

Yogurt – Ice cream fan? Try frozen or regular yogurt instead. You’ll get the same great taste, but lose the sugar! You can always add honey, fruit, or both for more color and flavor.

Cinnamon- Sugar Popcorn – This is the perfect treat for movie night! Choose a salt-free popcorn and sprinkle a little cinnamon and sweetener on top.

Remember to always speak with your physician before making serious dietary changes and find out what foods are best for you and for your aging loved one.
